Radio Astronomy: You won't believe what you are capable of hearing with normal amateur radio equipment and antennas. There is still a lot of unknown science about what is causing the radio signals. here is your chance to contribute to a part of the body of knowledge using your amateur radio experience. K4M DXpedition DVD & 2010 Chicago Marathon: A DXpedition to Midway Island was on the air in October of 2009. This 40 minute video provides the highlights of the event and what it took to operate from the Midway Atol. Click here to view the DXpedition web site.
There will also be an informative presentation by Eric K9LGE regarding the 2010 Chicago Marathon being run on October 10th.

National Electronics Museum: Late in February, Dick AH6EZ traveled to Baltimore, Maryland on business for a week long training session. While there he discovered the Museum and took some pictures of the equipment, including a replica spark gap transmitter and lots of old military radar. Included was a setup that was used to see the Japanese planes arriving at Oahu for the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941.

Special: The search for Amelia Earhart's airplane. There were a few FRRL members who were able to see the past W9DXCC presentation made by K0DAS, Rod Blockstone, a Collins Radio Engineer, about the 2002 search for Amelia Earhart that was supported by HF radio knowledge. At the last Central States VHF Society meeting, Rod described their 2006 trip. He prepared a special version of his presentation that described the technical and personal challenges in trying to find the possible crash site and Amelia's airplane.

Marconi Coherer: The October meeting will go back 42 years before that event to an unveiling of the Marconi Coherer which became the first commercialized morse code receiver. The history of these devices and the Marconi efforts will be described and then a 2009 version, built by AH6EZ will be demonstrated, including a miniature (FCC legal) spark gap transmitter.

Troubleshooting and solving many of the problems hams can face with their stations

The program will feature transmitter hunting and the use of DF equipment. There will be a demonstration of how to build and use a small DF yagi antenna with elements made from a standard workshop measuring tape. There will also be information on how to use an attenuator to improve your chances of finding a nearby transmitter, and a Q & A session.

The program will have a live demonstration of the now legal SkyCommand using a Kenwood TS2000 and the D7AG portable.

Scarborough Reef DXpedition: The July program will be an edited video of the 2007 DXpedition to Scarborough Reef. That's the place in the China Sea where they erect platforms on rocks that are barely above the water line.

Digital Voice: A video presentation about D-Star, P-25, AOR, WinDRM and DRM-DV was shown. What do these modes sound like? Are they for you? The producer (Gary KN4AQ) created this "Digital Voice for Amateur Radio" video which includes scenes of our FRRL D-Star repeater and licensee trustee, Kermit W9XA.

Old Radio Q&A: Since we are moving to a new meeting location, I thought we would have a program about something old. I have a small library of old radio books from 1914 to 1943. The program called "Old Radio Q&A" will share some of the strange ways of radio. If you do not know what a Klemencic Thermal Junction is, you will need to attend.

Antennas for You: As a continuation of the March program, if you bring in a sketch with measurements or scaled drawing of your house, attic, yard, trees, fences, chimney, verboten areas, etc, there will be a lot of information about VHF/UHF, 6m, HF antennas and we will suggest potential solutions with pros and cons for what you want to accomplish. All ideas and suggestions as a group will be entertained. It should be a lot of fun and will help educate all of on potential ways to get on the air better.

HF For Beginners: The last couple of FRRL programs have described your new HF privileges, even if you are a Technician licensee, what there is to do on HF even if you don't know CW, and how to squeeze an antenna into your lot with spouse and neighbor approval.
The May program will show you how to get on the air with a clean signal and how to feel confident your signal is getting out. We will have a live demonstration of various SWR meters and antenna tuners, and how to set up the audio for your SSB transmitter. We will describe operating techniques for rag chews, and DX which require very different styles.

Test Your FM Rig: The program for the evening will be measuring the transmitter power, frequency, and deviation of as many portable and mobile FM radios as possible.  Two measurement stations will be set up. One inside for HT's and one outside to measure mobiles.
